Vienna 2015 – Meet the experts in arthroscopic and open TMJ surgery

G. Undt demonstrating arthroscopic TMJ surgery

Already for the 8th time the Vienna TMJ course has been part of the S.O.R.G. Academy program. The course was held from October 5th - 8th, 2015 and 65 participants coming from 20 nations took the effort for travelling in order to come to in the Austrian capital.

Course Chairman Gerhard Undt managed to gather an outstanding international faculty. Besides the general S.O.R.G. members Florencio Monje (Badajoz/Spain), Nadeem Saeed (Oxford/UK) and Andrew Sidebottom (Nottingham/UK), prominent guest speakers like Franklin Dolwick (Gainesville/USA), Alexander Gaggl (Salzburg/Austria), Rafael Martin Granizo (Madrid/Spain) and Dorrit Nitzan (Jerusalem/Israel) presented at the theoretical part of the course. The faculty counted with an immense amount of experience in the field of TMJ surgery, but simultaneously with partly contradictive ideas on how to treat complex craniomandibular disorders and TMJ pathologies.

A true highlight of this course is always the hands-on workshop, during which 2 participants share one fresh-frozen cadaver specimen together. Especially the part on arthrocentesis and arthroscopic TMJ surgery caught the interest of all participants. Spending more time on practicing these techniques was the only criticism heard in the audience. The Karl Storz Com did an excellent job in providing the necessary endoscopy units and arthroscopes in order to make this cadaver lab happen. Their steady support to this course was –again- highly appreciated.

The next Vienna TMJ course will be held from November 6th - 9th, 2016. It will be linked together with the Dresden course on TMJ fracture management and accesses to the TMJ. Early booking for both courses is advisable.
