The S.O.R.G. Academy

In the beginnings of rigid fixation in cranio-maxillofacial surgery, thick and heavy osteosynthesis plates applying long bicortical osteosynthesis screws were the method of choice. But not always these plates did meet the requirements to re-establish a perfect occlusion and complications were often meant to be overcome by using even stronger hardware.

Dynamic compression concepts, taken over from the fields of orthopedic surgery were applied as well. But they could lead to malunion of the fragments instead of accurate repositioning.

Maxime Champy was one of the first persons to overcome this vicious circle. Based on a foundamental biomechanic analysis already carried out by Michelet and others in his department in Strasbourg, he had a simple but simoultaneously revolutionnary idea: Apply thinner plates and smaller screws and move higher up towards the tension lines of the mandible could be the key to success. This fresh idea soon spread out over various Centers in Europe but it would still need a steady teaching & education support in order to be of scientific relavance. This was the starting point of S.O.R.G. As the miniplate idea is without any doubt leading the field in mandibular fracture management, the S.O.R.G. Group stills carries on in their educational efforts spreading out to all regional geographic regions of the globe covering all fields of interest for nowadays cranio- maxillofacial surgeons. The organisational setup in sections and groups is very suitable to reach the different target groups and regional areas.

Teaching Concept

So the nowadays teaching concept of S.O.R.G. is much more than just miniplating. It covers all major fields of today’s cranio-maxillofacial surgery: From trauma to reconstructive surgery, from orthognathics to preprosthetic, from T.M.J. to craniofacial surgery.

Important side topics like e.g. the aesthetic surgery field will also have their share in the course program. Whether you are a young resident or a senior consultant, you will certainly find the right course for every given moment in your medical career.

What S.O.R.G. courses stand for

Evidence-based teaching on state-of-the art level
